Re: Update on the proposed support recovery housing at 8180
Ash Street, Richmond, B.C.
Dear Resident:
I am writing today to provide you with an update on Turning
Point Recovery Society’s (“Turning Point”) proposal to develop
8180 Ash Street for use as a residential support recovery
residence.
Turning Point’s Rezoning Application
Since our previous letter of July 13, 2007, the City of Richmond
has asked us to post an information sign on the property at 8180
Ash Street informing the community and the general public of the
submission of our rezoning application.
The sign will be posted on the property on Tuesday, September
18, 2007 and will provide a reference number (RZ07-380433) and
contact name and number for Planning staff at the City of
Richmond.
Turning Point’s Expansion Proposal
The rezoning application currently before the City of Richmond
proposes to provide two 10-bed primary recovery residences (one
for men and one for women) and a transitional housing residence
with 18 self-contained units, at 8180 Ash Street.
It is important to note that while the sign will indicate our
proposal would accommodate approximately 40 people, Turning
Point is currently reviewing this density level in response to
feedback from the Neighbourhood Liaison Committee and a
potential reduction in density is being considered. Neighbours
will receive an update should there be any changes.
The proposed residences to be constructed on the Ash Street
Property will stay within the scale and design of the
neighbourhood and will blend with existing homes while greatly
improving the site’s current façade.
Turning Point’s residents choose to participate in our program
and must demonstrate a strong desire to overcome their addiction
and live in an environment free from drugs and alcohol.
Our proposal offers a practical solution to an urgent problem
that affects us all. The problem of addiction resides in all
communities across the Lower Mainland, including Richmond. More
support recovery beds are required to help solve one of the most
pressing health and social issues facing our community today.
Importantly, with our new residences, Turning Point will give
priority placement to women, and Richmond residents, to make it
easier for them to get the help they need, when they need it.
As we have from day one, we will continue to keep you updated on
our progress and will notify you in advance of our public open
houses in the community. In the meantime, please call me if you
have any questions or if you would like to tour our Odlin Road
facility. Also, I encourage you to visit our website for further
